A friend was hosting a jewelry party and wanted a cake to indulge in. I went with chocolate fudge cake and vanilla buttercream covered in hot pink and black zebra print fondant. A huge fondant diamond ring adorned the top of the cake.

An old co-worker asked me to bake a GIANT cupcake and decorate it in pink and green for her sweet Emerson's first birthday smash cake. Bow and polka dots in pink and green were the decor for this girly girl! Who wouldn't love a giant cupcake!!!

Another fabulous 1st birthday cake!!! I think 1st birthday cakes are the most fun because the creative juices are flowing and nothing beats a 1 year old tearing into a cake! This cake was for a St. Patrick's Day baby with a rocket ship theme. The party guest cake was a big ol' rocket ship ready to fly into outer space, while the smash cake was a round version of outer space with the moon and stars.

A co-worker of my husbands called me one night and asked if I had the time to bake an extra cake for a surprise for my husband. Of course I said YES! My husband is a fireman, as you all know (and if not, the name Firehouse Sweets may have given you a hint), and was being transfered to another station. The guys love to play jokes on one another and tricked my hubby into eating dog biscuits. Now I know most people know what a dog biscuit looks like and wouldn't eat one willingly (I hope), but these dog biscuits looked just like lemon cookies so anyone might have eaten one. I was asked to make a cake look like a dog bone, so I did. Of course I even colored the icing a nice shade of brown like the real bones and added a dog collar with the number 17 for his new station. The boys got a real WOOF out of this! The cake stated: It will be wuff without you!!!

A very good friend asked me to bake her baby shower cake, so of course I said YES! Once again I was given free reign on the design. Knowing the babies room would be purple butterflies, I decided against the normal baby shower themed cakes and decided to match the nursery. The cake created was a purple butterfly which would match the nursery theme to the tee!

I LOVE receiving messges saying "please contact _____ because they would like to order a cake from you". Oh how those messages make my day! I received a message from my husbands aunt telling me that a friend of hers needed me to call her about a cake and cake pops for a 5th birthday. The best part was the theme....girly, hot pink pirate skulls! Who would have thought!!! Pirate Skull cake pops with hot pink bandanas and hearts were made for the little girls classmates and then a pink pirate skull cake was made for the party.

A fabulous mom asked me to bake her son's birthday cake. She gave him free reign on the design, so he came to me and asked for a Pikachu birthday cake WITH Pikachu on top. He also wanted strawberry so we settled for pound cake with strawberry buttercream....YUMMM!!!!! The birthday party was held at the bowling alley on base and of course mom went all out with decorating the room to go with the cake theme! Nothing is better than a bunch of 8 and 9 year old kids loving the cake, and the parents too!

Black History Month

February is dedicated to celebrating Black History Month. At the school where I teach, we celebrated daily by learning about many of the people that have impacted us. At the end of the month, we celebrated with a luncheon. I was honored to be asked to bake the cake for the occasion. My brain starting racing with all of the different things I could do. I chose to create a stack of three books since books are the key to learning about our history.

No More Monkeying Around - It's a 1st Birthday Celebration

I get super excited when I am handed a challenge. This was my first official 1st Birthday cake, which is exciting in itself, but I was asked to make a monkey. This was not any ol' flat monkey cake. They wanted a monkey sitting up, so I started planning months ahead! I had never carved a cake before or made anything like this, so the ideas were just flowing. The cake chosen was my yellow cake with strawberry buttercream. The cake was actually pretty easy to make once I got carving away! The body was made from stacking 5 layers of cake, while the head was made from a ball shaped pan. The arms, legs, tail, and ears were made from rice krispie treats so that they were light, especially the ears so they wouldn't fall off! The party was a "Winter" themed party for a New Years Eve baby girl! To incorporate winter into the monkey, I made a hot pink scarf from fondant with a matching bow! The smash cake was also yellow cake with strawberry buttercream, but was made into a snowball. It was covered in white buttercream and sprinkled with white chocolate carvings to symbolize snow! Happy Birthday Paisley!!!

I LOVE the Christmas season. Don't get me wrong, I love giving and getting presents from loved ones (and had an awesome Christmas thanks to my fabulous husband) but I also love baking for the holidays. Nothing reminds me more of the holidays than the smell of yummy deliciousness baking in the oven and wafting throughout the house! This year I think I quadrupled my holiday orders. I included many trays and baskets of goodies! Most were given out as presents and thank you's. Who wouldn't want cake balls and cake pops for Christmas instead of the usual basket of chocolate, cheese and crackers, or fruit! Well here are just some examples of my hard work this holiday 2010!

Yesterday was 10/10/10 and it was a very lucky day. Two of my good friends got engaged on this special day and will be planning their upcoming wedding. Beauty and the Beast

"Beauty and the Beast" just so happens to be one of the greatest Disney movies ever! I remember watching it all of the time growing up and singing along with the movie! I just bought the Blu-ray last week when it came out! I saw the commercial the week before promoting the release and couldn't wait to get off work and head to the store to get it, along with my $10.00 off coupon thanks to a fabulous parent of mine! Well, since the movie is such a hit, it has been the theme on baking sites. I saw posted online Mrs. Potts Cake Pops and I knew I had to make them myself, so I went out and purchase all of the items I didn't already have. They took some time and I will make some corrections next time, but I hope you enjoy them! I know my co-workers did!

The Great Pumpkin

Growing up, fall was not my favorite time of year. Of course I loved dressing up for Halloween and going out to trick-or-treat, but I didn't enjoy the season very much. Now that I am older and living in the south, I have a lot more respect for this time of year. A lot of it has to do with the fact that I miss the northern fall season. I miss the cool weather, flannel, the changing of the leaves, raking the leaves and jumping into the piles, just to rake them over and over again, going to the pumpkin patch, and so much more. Don't get me wrong...a lot of this happens in the south, it's just not the same having to wait until the week before Halloween to carve my pumpkin for fear that the HOT temperatures will kill my pumpkin with a not so slow death. I mean come on now, I actually put on a bathing suit and laid in the sun in my backyard and got some color! It's a hot one down here! Anyway, back on topic. I do love fall and pumpkins and all the beautiful colors! I am in the process of all of my fall treats and just wanted to share my Jack-o-lantern Cake Pops!

Princesses All Around Us

This is definitely the season for princesses. Maybe it has a little something to do with the new release of "Beauty and the Beast" on Blu-ray! I have officially done a princess cake each weekend for the last 3 weeks and am loving it! I have one more next weekend, but that one will not have a tiara. Last weeks was for a lady celebrating her 24th birthday and she had fallen in love with Eva Joy's princess cake the week before. This weeks cake was for a co-workers 4 year old. They deserve something delicious to snack on, and my dogs LOVE my homemade dog biscuits, especially when they have peanut butter in them! The First of Many

Today, September 25, 2010, I delivered my very first wedding cake. I was asked about a month ago to make a wedding cake for a friend's sister. Of course I was ecstatic! This has been my dream since I began making cakes. The bottom tier is pound cake with buttercream, the middle tier is yellow cake with lemon buttercream, and the top tier is pound cake with peanut butter buttercream. All tiers were covered in cream cheese icing. A chocolate brown ribbon was wrapped around each tier and then handmade chocolate brown gum paste flowers were placed on the tiers. An "S" topped the cake! I would say SUCCESS for my first of hopefully many!

Sponge Bob Lives in a Pineapple Under the Sea!

Sponge Bob really does live under the sea! Jase will be celebrating his 4th birthday with the coolest beach cake with Sponge Bob sitting in the sand on his own little island with some shells and pineapples! This yellow cake is covered in blue buttercream to look like the ocean and the waves. There is fondant coral and chocolate shells. Sponge Bob is made from marshmallow fondant and is hanging out on the brown sugar sand!

Every girl should have her special day where she can be a princess. Eva Joy has her day today! She will be celebrating her 5th birthday in full princess style! Her chocolate fudge cake is filled with cream cheese icing and covered in pale purple cream cheese icing. A pale pink fondant ribbon and bow adorn the bottom of the cake and it is topped with a sparkly tiara! Perfect fit for a princess!!!

I have finally remembered to blog about my new website. A few weeks ago I sat down and created a website for Firehouse Sweets. Don't worry, I will still keep blogging, however, I will definitely need the website as the business grows. I can't believe I am coming up on my one year anniversary already. I began making the cake balls back in October 2009 but didn't get my first official order until November 2009. (Stay tuned for November Anniversary Specials) Now almost a year later, it was time to begin an actual website. Happy 3rd Birthday Samantha!!! It was my pleasure to create a Ladybug themed birthday cake for the sweetest 3 year old that I know! My wonderful co-worker Jenn asked me to make her daughters birthday cake. Samantha is in love with ladybugs and the color pink. The bottom tier was chocolate fudge cake and yellow cake with Oreo butter cream and marshmallow fondant ladybugs. The top tier was yellow cake with hot pink marshmallow fondant made into a ladybug. A chocolate fudge, lime green ladybug joined the party as well!

A good friend of ours just turned 21, so I decided to surprise him with the best 21st gift ever...a super, delicious, chocolate fudge cake with buttercream. The cake was topped with a marshmallow fondant "Bud Light" symbol from the top of the bottle. Let the celebration begin!

I was recently put to the challenge. Make a birthday cake? NO PROBLEM! Make it sugar free? BRING IT ON!!! I have never used, eaten, let alone purchased Splenda in my life! I did my research and tried a few recipes (which I wasn't pleased with) and went with my yellow cake recipe and just substituted the sugar for Splenda. The texture was a bit more like pound cake, but was still yummy. Trial and error will continue until it is mastered! The theme was Hannah Montana for the party. What four year old doesn't love Hannah Montana? The cake was iced in Splenda Chocolate icing and decorated with my marshmallow fondant. I used pink, white, and teal to create a guitar, stars, and the HM initials. Super cute and super fun!

I had the pleasure of creating the bachelorette cake of my choice all the way from the cake, icing, and design! I opted for my classic pound cake with raspberry buttercream and topped with my marshmallow fondant in hot pink with green accents. The cake was adorned with a martini glass! The girls were going out for a night on the town in Atlanta to the piano bar before the bride to be was to become a married woman!

Last night I participated in The Lydia Project's 6th Annual Dessert Auction and Cake Design Contest. All proceeds go to help women with cancer. This event was an absolute blast. I donated Cake Balls and Cake Pops decorated purple for their colors. I also entered a cake in the contest. The cake was my pound cake with raspberry butter cream filling and marshmallow fondant. The cake features a hat box with the Lydia purse decorated with items needed by the foundation such as stamps, note cards, pens, lotion, and stamps.

After all of the birthdays, I am finally uploading the new pictures! Over the last month, I have done 3 birthday cakes all for special ladies! The first was for Emma's 9th birthday party. Her theme was polka dots, so I created a two-tiered cake with marshmallow fondant, full of polka dots using the colors from her party napkins! The bottom tier was my chocolate fudge cake with butter cream and the top tier was red velvet cake with cream cheese. YUMMY!

The next cake was for Madelyn's 9th birthday party. Her party was a "Peace" theme. This cake my homemade pound cake with bright pink butter cream. It was topped with a tie-dye fondant peace sign and tie-dyed fondant flowers. Peace!

The last birthday cake was for a co-workers birthday. She was going to Disney World to celebrate her birthday, so she wanted to share a cake with her students. This cake was also my homemade pound cake with light pink butter cream (chosen by her daughter) and adorned with yellow butter cream flowers.

I just love making everyone's birthdays special!

I had the pleasure of creating a Bridal Shower Cake for a shower that a co-worker was throwing. She came to me about a month ago and said it was "prim and proper", the colors were Georgia Bulldog red, black, and white, and that I had free range as to what to make for it! That is a bakers dream, but can be hard because there are so many things you can do with it! The first task was to decide on a flavor. I went with my classic pound cake with butter cream. I figured everyone would enjoy it! Then it was decorating time. The cake is covered in white marshmallow fondant with a red and black polka dotted ribbon and a large red fondant bow on top. I think it was bridal shower success!

I usually don't make my own "birthday cake", but this year was different. I decided to celebrate with my students. We lucked out, and our class had won a pizza party for the day of my birthday, so I made dessert to go along with it. Being that my favorite color is pink, I wanted to frost my homemade chocolate fudge cupcakes with bright pink butter cream. While making the butter cream, I decided it would be nice to make lime green butter cream too (mainly for the boys in my class - I just knew some of them would say "PINK?") Away I went with the decorating! I even mixed the two colors on a few cupcakes and they had a "tie-dye" look to them. The funny thing is most of my boys wanted the pink cupcakes in the end! I had the pleasure to create a 50th birthday cake for a wonderful friend and co-worker. The best part about it was that I had free range to create any cake that I wanted, including the flavors! The top layer was red velvet with cream cheese frosting, and the bottom layer was pound cake with raspberry butter cream. YUMMMMY! The cake was covered in black fondant and hot pink marshmallow fondant, and decorated with fondant polka dots and a big 50 on top. Everyone loved the cake. What impressed me the most was once the cake was cut, the party guests were like a bunch of vultures because it was gone within minutes. Not one piece of cake was left! That is how you know you've done a good job!

I am a total beach bum! It doesn't help that I went to college in Myrtle Beach, SC, so I am always ready and willing to hit the beach for an all day tanning session! Now that I live in GA, I don't have the chance to go everyday like I used to! I found a fellow baker that made a beach cake, so I made a spin-off of it. Everyone loves to put their toes in the sand! Today I had the pleasure of creating a Spongebob cake for a 5th birthday. As always, I am beyond excited to work on anything, but this cake was for a good friend that is also our Realtor. His son wanted a Spongebob themed cake, so after Googling pictures of the character, I knew what to do. The cake is a marble cake with butter cream frosting. DELICIOUS!

Spongebob Squarepants

Spongebob is loved by all little kids. I was recently asked by my hairdresser to make cupcakes for her son's 5th birthday at school. Of course I was beyond excited for the task at hand. I kept throwing ideas around in my head for weeks and surfed the internet. I came across cupcakes with all of the Spongebob characters made out of fondant. Now the creativity was throwing! I broke out the fondant, began making all different colors, and the characters came alive. For my first try at making characters, I was pretty impressed with myself. I also made a chocolate fudge cupcake recipe with blue butter cream....YUMMY!!!

My First Baby Shower

Today was my first ever event that I have baked for. I was beyond excited, even though I had just been down and out with the stomach bug, but not even that would keep me from baking the bee hive cake, 4 dozen cupcakes, and surprising the mom-to-"bee" with flower cake pops! The theme was Winnie the Pooh, so I created a Bee Hive cake with flowers and bumble bees and matching cupcakes. It was so exciting to hear everyone rave about my creations. I can't wait to do it again!!!

Bee Hive

I was asked to create a Bee Hive cake for a baby shower. I was given pictures to use for ideas and went with it. I decided to create a trial cake to make sure what was in my head could be created with cake. I used 4 layers of chocolate cake (one 6", two 8", and one 9"). I then frosted it with vanilla butter cream and pale yellow marshmallow fondant. The cake was decorated with a little door, flowers and a bee to top it off. Along the way I came across some frustrations. I only have one counter large enough to roll out fondant and have the space for decorating. What I forgot about was that my dishwasher was running while trying to roll fondant and decorate. You might be thinking "how did you not know it was running?" Well, my dishwasher is brand new and pretty quiet, and I was so into the decorating that it didn't even cross my mind.

To make a long story short, fondant and heat don't mix well at all, and the heat was coming up through the counter the entire time making many issues. I finally realized towards the end that the dishwasher was running because steam was coming out of it! OOPS!!! Lesson learned! Needless to say, its not a perfect cake, but it served its purpose and was gone in no time by my co-workers. I will definitely revamp for next time! The pictures also came out dark, which I didn't realize until it was too late!

My First Fondant Experience

Well I finally jumped on the cake and fondant bandwagon and gave it a try! I was given a recipe for Marshmallow Fondant from a friend and fellow baker, so I figured I might as well. I made a homemade pound cake with homemade buttercream and chose to make this first cake with a baby shower theme. My love of pink and green came out along with my favorite, the polka dot! It took a few trials of rolling out the fondant, but it worked like a charm and was easier than I thought it would be. I was pretty impressed with myself! I learned not to roll it too thin and that a little gel coloring goes a long way, but the bright colors worked well. Thank goodness my co-workers love to eat my goodies because I was able to come home with a clean cake plate!

The Giant Cupcake

2010 is among us, and it's time to make cakes! The Christmas season of Cake Balls went extremely well, so now the baking begins for birthdays, showers, and other parties. I started with the giant cupcake. I was so excited to make this cake, I didn't care if it was eaten, I just wanted to make it! It turned out adorable and tastes good too! It is the perfect cake for a birthday, the cupcake lover, or anyone who just loves cake!

The Holiday Season

WOW! The holiday season is among us! Thanksgiving was busy this year. I spent my first four days of Thanksgiving break baking away. I had a total of 13 Cake Ball orders for the Thanksgiving holiday. I was incredibly happy and surprised for the big turnout. Everything went smoothly and was a huge success! I am looking forward to all of the Christmas orders to come!

Cake balls have been the new "choice of dessert" around my job! I got the recipe from a co-worker and gave them a trial run. They turned out so delicious that I began mixing up different cake batters and icing flavors to see what I could create. The best part is decorating them. I think that is what makes them different. I am experimenting with all different colors, designs, flavors, and anything else I can think of!
